Lola Caron Award

The Lola Caron Award recognizes the best exhibit of Québec postal history at a BNAPEX convention. It was established in 2017 and presented for the first time at BNAPEX 2018 Quebec.

Lola Giasson-Caron was born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1910, and came to Quebec in the 1930s. During her professional career she was a teacher, stenographer, and secretary for the federal and provincial governments. She also served as secretary and administrative assistant to senior officials and ministers of the Government of Quebec, including Pierre Laporte. In 1942, she married sergeant-major Lionel J. Caron. Lola Caron died in Québec City on 10 October 2006.

Lola became interested in philately in the 1950s, and her contribution to various philatelic activities and associations has been recognized throughout Canada. She joined the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC) in 1961 and BNAPS in 1972. She served as president of the Société philatélique de Québec from 1974 to 1976. She was also one of the original members of the Fédération québécoise de philatélie and the Académie québécoise d’études philatéliques. From 1982 to 1984, she was president of the Société d’histoire postale du Québec.

She was actively involved in the organization of philatelic exhibitions, including the RPSC Royale - Royal of both 1975 and 1985, and BNAPEX in 1979. She was elected a Fellow of the RPSC in 1992. In 2002, Lola Caron received the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal, honouring her significant contribution to philately and postal history.

Lola wrote numerous articles for various philatelic journals, including Philatélie Québec, le Bulletin d'histoire postale et de marcophilie, les Cahiers de l'Académie, and BNA Topics. Her articles dealt with Quebec post offices, the post offices in the Magdalen Islands, postmarks used during the Second World War, and the issuance of the 1939 Canadian National Memorial stamp.


Le « Prix Lola Caron » est attribué à la meilleure collection d’histoire postale du Québec lors d'un congrès BNAPEX. Le Prix a été créé en 2017 et décerné pour la première fois à l’occasion de BNAPEX 2018 Québec.

Lola s’est intéressée à la philatélie à partir des années 1950 et sa contribution aux diverses activités et associations philatéliques a été reconnue à travers le Canada. Elle a adhéré à la Société royale de philatélie du Canada en 1961 et la BNAPS en 1972. Elle a siégé comme présidente de la Société philatélique de Québec de 1974 à 1976. Elle est également l'un des membres initiaux de la Fédération québécoise de philatélie et de l'Académie québécoise d'études philatéliques. De 1982 à 1984, elle a été présidente de la Société d'histoire postale du Québec.

Elle a participé activement à l’organisation d’expositions philatéliques dont la Royale de 1975 et de 1985 et de BNAPEX en 1979. Elle a été élue Fellow de la Société royale de philatélie du Canada en 1992. En 2002, Lola Caron reçoit la médaille du jubilé de la reine Elizabeth II honorant ainsi sa contribution significative à la philatélie et à l'histoire postale.

Elle a rédigé de nombreux articles dans différentes revues philatéliques, dont Philatélie Québec, le Bulletin d'histoire postale et de marcophilie, les Cahiers de l'Académie et BNA Topics. Ses articles traitent des bureaux de poste de Québec, de la poste aux Îles-de-la-Madeleine, de la philatélie et des marques postales en usage pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et de l'émission du timbre du Mémorial national canadien.
