1859 Cents Issue Used on Cover after April 1, 1868

An earlier version of this article was published under the title "1859 Issue Covers - Post April 1, 1868" in the newsletter of the Pence-Cents Era Study Group, Vol. VII, No. 3, Aug. 2018.

This is a census of covers with 1859 Cents Issue stamps used after the Large Queen stamps were issued on April 1, 1868.

In February 1868, the 17¢ rate to Great Britain via New York was reduced to 15¢. The 15¢ Large Queen was issued around that time (two off-cover copies known March 2). The other Large Queens were not officially released until April 1 when several other rates changed. At that time, postmasters were requested to return their remaining copies of the 1859 Cents issue to head office. This means that 1859 Cents stamps used after April 1, 1868, were remainders that individuals or businesses had previously purchased.

Only a very few 15¢ rate covers are known with Cents stamps used between the rate reduction to Great Britain in February and April 1. These covers could have been considered for this article, but they were not because Cents stamps were still being sold by post offices.

The census is divided into the following sections:

In the "Firby" column, Y = the cover is in his list. In the "Seen" column, Y = the cover was recorded by the author. If "Firby" = N and "Seen" = Y, then the cover is newly recorded. All stamps are from the 1859 Cents Issue unless noted otherwise.

Examples of several covers are illustrated. The author would like to thank Ron Majors for the illustrations.

There is a 7½ pence imperf cover dated OC 4 / 1868, but it is fake.

The author would appreciate the help of other collectors. Please send scans of any covers not listed or listed as "Seen = N" to waynesmithtor@yahoo.ca.
