The Provinces of Canada
As you know now, some of the eastern provinces of Canada and also British Columbia used their own stamps long ago. This cover is an example from Newfoundland. It was used to send a letter to Nelson, British Columbia and carries 3 stamps showing codfish, which it calls the "currency of Newfoundland". This refers to the fact that one of the main industries in Newfoundland was fishing for codfish. One interesting thing about this cover is that it was opened by a Post Office inspector because it was during the Second World War and Newfoundland was not yet part of Canada, and the back of the envelope shows "Opened by Examiner". This kind of thing really turns on collectors of covers.
