Using the Index

Each issue of The Admiral’s Log has a consecutive number variously called an Issue number, Edition number, or Whole number (see third column in table). This number is important because it is used as part of the references in this index. For example, 16-22 refers to page 22 of issue (whole number) 16.

Users of the subject index should be aware of the following:

  • The subject index begins by listing each denomination of the Admiral series, generally in numerical order. The rest of the subjects then follow, listed alphabetically.
  • References in the subject index followed by ff (for example 16-22 ff) indicate that the subject starts on the page indicated, but continues on following pages.
  • Some subjects are continued in, or commented on, in following issues. These threads are indicated by the words continued or further comment.
  • All covers illustrated for their rates are indexed under Rates using the terms found on page 5 of Allan Steinhart’s The Admiral Era: A Rate Study 1912-1928.

Users of the author and title indexes should be aware of the following:

  • There are different editions (or printings) of some issues of The Admiral’s Log. In later editions (or printings), some errors of authorship were corrected and some articles originally without titles were given titles. A few titles were changed to better reflect the subject of the article. There were no changes in pagination. Both versions are indexed here.
  • The title index has the titles of all the articles in alphabetical order. Exceptions are titles that start with the prepositions a, an or the, which are filed under the next word of the title.
